Android’s Shortcomings Proves Brilliance of iPhone

Pete Mortensen writing for Cult of Mac has a great article on why, as iPhone users, we have nothing to fear from the Google Android phone. (But remember, good competition is both healthy and good for consumers, as well as Apple. It forces them to push things forward.)

Google has left a lot undone with Android: no built-in Exchange support; no desktop syncing; no video playback; a comically variable UI. But it’s OK, Google says: third-party developers will definitely come up with solutions. While that’s probably true, it also means that standards won’t get established for these features, which means that new features will always lag behind more tightly controlled platforms like the iPhone. Worse, the Exchange omission ensures that this will never play with corporate IT environments that are looking to replace a fleet of aging Treos right now. That means the only credible alternative to Windows Mobile and BlackBerry? iPhone. I never thought I would see the day when Apple was more corporate friendly than the open alternative.

  1. Android may have some shortcomings, but Apple needs to really get their act together with the AppStore and application rejections or developers are going to jump over to Android.

Why spend 6 months developing an app for the iPhone that has a change of getting rejected when they can spend that time on Android and know that they will be able to sell it without a problem.

I LOVE my iPhone, but I’m really worried that Apple is going to screw the pooch on this one.

  2. I agree with you, Dave. I think the Android is JUST what Apple needs for a kick in the pants!

  3. Hi Tim … great podcast.

Look … competition is good. iPhone owners will benefit much more if Android phones provide solid competition, as I think they will. Apple will respond to competitive pressures … they sure don’t seem to respond to us (their loyal customers). Remember … competition is good. Android will provide innovative features and we will ultimately benefit.

  4. I agree 100% with you, Mark.
